St Patrick’s Cathedral played host to 47 couples from Parishes around the Diocese of Parramatta on Sunday 19 September, who gathered for the ‘Celebrating the Journey’ Mass with Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP.

Centacare Catholic Social Services organises the event annually, and this year brought together couples who were married in 1985, 1970 and 1960, as well as those who have been married for more than 50 years. It was a wonderful opportunity for these couples to celebrate their marital journey with each other, fellow couples, their family and friends.

Among these couples were Kevin and Phyllis Kinsela, who are blessed to be celebrating 62 years of marriage this year. The Kinselas were married at St John’s Church in Auburn by Fr O’Reilly and for the past 55 years have lived in the Parish of Sacred Heart, Westmead. They have experience both joy and hardships in their marriage, but as Phyllis says, “You have your ups and downs, but you still love each other and that helps you through everything.”

In his homily, Bishop Anthony spoke of the level of commitment, embrace of permanence and self-sacrifice required in marriage.

"Each spouse here today gives thanks to the other for the generosity that has kept them together for decades," Bishop Anthony said.

"That is why we give thanks for the example each couple gives to each other couple, the older ones to the younger ones, the ones who’ve persevered through struggles to those who have struggles ahead."
