Gambling counselling is offered by Catholic Care Social Services at Blacktown Castle hill, Emerton and Parramatta. This is a free, confidential, face to face and telephone counselling service to individuals and their families affected by problem gambling.

Individuals can attend as many sessions as they may find helpful. Appointments for face to face counselling can be made by telephone. After hours counselling service is available on some days.

Experienced counsellors use various evidence based theories, to help individuals understand their situation better and help them identify what works best for them, using a non judgemental approach.

Counselling for problem gambling has been proved to be beneficial in either attaining complete abstinence from gambling or to be able to gamble responsibly. Times taken to achieve goals may vary from a single session for some to many sessions for others, depending on individual’s circumstances. Regular follow up sessions are also a part of the service.

What happens:

Weekly meetings usually last for one and a half hours and are led by a trained counsellor.

Our support groups are free-of-charge and there is no need to book attendance - simply call  (02) 8822 2222 if you have questions about the group.

The groups usually comprise a small number of people who come together to share personal experiences and information in a safe, friendly and supportive environment. Participants often form a bond based on the commonality of their day-to-day experiences. They learn from each other, experience relief, and become inspired by each others' journeys. Often there are people present who have taken steps towards wellbeing after a period of problems with gambling behaviours, who provide support to others, in their own stories.

Problem gamblers are individuals who have experienced adverse consequences as a result of gambling behaviours. Problem gambling affects not only the wellbeing of the person with a gambling problem, approximately 5-6 people are impacted for each person who experiences problems with gambling in their lives.

Problem gamblers and the people around them may experience different concerns, as a result of gambling behaviours:

  • Financial problems
  • Relationship/family breakdown
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Difficulties at work or unemployment
  • Feelings of guilt and desperation
  • Feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Low self-esteem

The Gambling Help Support Group at CatholicCare Social Services Blacktown is open to problem gamblers and family members, as well as to anyone whose life has been impacted by problems associated with problem gambling.  If you would like more information please contact CatholicCare Social Services at Blacktown and ask to speak with Trish Nowland or Linda Davis.
